Fiji’s fragrant treasure
Fijian sandalwood, Santalum yasi, is a different proposition from our structural timbers — a rare, aromatic heartwood valued less for its strength than for its scent and its grain. For generations it has been one of the Pacific’s most sought-after materials, traded for perfumery, carving and ceremony.
Because that value has historically driven over-harvesting, yasi is a carefully managed species. The sandalwood we supply is legally harvested and sustainably sourced under Fijian regulation, with both managed wild stands and plantation stock — so this exceptional material can be enjoyed without depleting it.
Character and uses
The heartwood is pale gold to honey-brown, fine and dense, and carries the deep, warm aroma sandalwood is famous for. It carves and turns superbly, holding crisp detail, which makes it a favourite for sculpture, turnery and small luxury objects. Distilled, it yields the prized sandalwood oil at the heart of fine fragrance.
